Ian Turner is Professor of Coastal Engineering and Director of the Water Research Laboratory (WRL), a major research facility of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW Sydney.
WRL is Australia’s largest coastal hydraulics research laboratory, and regarded as the ‘birthplace’ of coastal engineering in Australia.
Professor Turner leads a team that manages one of the world’s longest, continuously running coastline monitoring programs worldwide now spanning more than 4 decades, based around Narrabeen-Collaroy located on Sydney’s northern beaches.
In June 2016 his team worked in collaboration with the NSW Department of Environment and Heritage and UNSW School of Aviation to quantify in detail the extensive beach erosion that was observed at this site, and place these observations within the context of the regional-scale response of the NSW coastline to this major erosion event.
Ian is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, and Chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers International Conference in Coastal Engineering to be hosted in Sydney in 2020.
